Dell Children's Strategic Plan Suggestions to Be Summarized and Shared.

Dell Children's is nearing the end of its current five-year strategic plan. A wide range of ideas were advanced for future planning during the physician retreat last month. Bob Bonar will summarize that input and draft a new plan to be reviewed by a core planning team before finalizing. More information about this planning process will be shared in verbal reports at upcoming physician meetings. (12/28/07)

HAAM Benefit Raises $180,000

More than 175 community-spirited Austin area businesses donated five percent of their proceeds for the day and additional funds were raised through a telethon and challenge grants. The Health Alliance for Austin Musicians provides medical, dental and mental health care to the region's low-income musicians. Seton Family President & CEO Charles J. Barnett Recognized for Work to Improve Welfare of Children.

S He received the Rostow Award for Leadership from the Austin Project (TAP). The organization was founded in 1992 by Walt and Elspeth Rostow bringing together political, business and religious leaders to develop and implement innovative ways to help children and their families overcome barriers that prevent them from reaching their full potential. Brendle Glomb, MD Recieves Distinguished Service Award from American College of Chest Physicians.

The award recognizes his pro bono work in Central American and Caribbean, where he was coordinator for and a faculty member responsible for pediatric pulmonology courses. The courses assist local physicians in learing how to treat children's respiratory diseases. (12/18/07)

Generic Version of Seton Diabetes Passport to Benefit Community.

The handy pocket-size folding card serves as a road map for patients to help insure they get proper care by self-empowering them. The Texas Medicaid Program has asked to use it and the Texas Medical Foundation will make it available to physicians statewide. TDH is looking at the possibility of helping print and distribute it for all Austin area diabetes patients as a pilot program. The community-friendly version will be widely available after the first of the year at churches, community canters and various Central Texas clinics. Seton Fund 2008 Hope and Inspiration Calendar Benefits Shivers Cancer Center.

Created by professional portrait photographer Alisa Murray selected the center, which provides medical, emotional, spiritual and even some financial assistance to patients with cancer. Some of the patients are featured in the calendar. The calendar is $15 and may be purchased at any Seton Family hospital, Sweet Charity or online. Dell Children's ED Improves Workflow.

Average wait time for patients has been reduced considerably even though volumes continue to exceed prior year. Changes include extending the hours of Minor Emergency, increasing physician coverage and implementation of a First Care/Virtual ED program that puts a physician in the triage area to expedite patient assessment. Families and Friends Now Can Send Online Greeting Cards to Hospitalized Patients.

Seton.net recently added service to include online greeting cards that people can send to family and friends who are in the hospital. This service, which was already available at Dell Children’s, is now being offered at Brack, SMCA, SNW and SHL. It will also be available at Seton Medical Center Williamson in February. Seton Volunteers oversee the printing and delivery of the cards. (12/10/07)

Supportive and Palliative Care Services Expand at SMCA, Brack.

Two AVP nurses have been hired to focus on the special needs of patients with life-limiting illness. Any physician can request service at SMCA or Brack. Physicians had asked that the name be changed to reflect a broader scope for palliative care that is not limited to the end of life. A screening tool will be attached to all patient charts. Seton Learning Center Easier to Use.

Beginning Nov. 19, SLC is migrating to the Ascension Health University learning environment. It will provide a more intuitive course registration experience and a better platform for online learning. The platform gives Seton the flexibility to create interactive online courseware. SLC will be offline today through Sunday. Don’t Forget Seton Family Facilities Are Smoke-Free Beginning Today.

Smoking ban now includes surrounding and adjacent grounds and parking areas in addition to buildings. Smoking cessation aids are available for purchase at Seton gift shops. For those who want help to quit smoking, resource information is located at our information desks and gift shops. Perinatal Safety Initiative Earns Distinguished Honor from The Joint Commission.

The Seton Family's perinatal safety initiative "The Road to Zero Preventable Birth Injuries" received the 2007 Ernest Amory Codman Award, named for the physician regarded as the 'father of outcomes measurement.' It showcases the effective use of performance measurement to improve health care quality and safety. Seton's initiative across its four sites providing obstetrical services begain in 2003 resulted in a 93 percent reduction in birth trauma rates. (11/12/07)

Reducing Sharps Injuries.

The Seton family has been successful in reducing sharps injuries over the past year, but we still have a way to go before reaching our ultimate goal of zero preventable sharps injuries. Medical staff utilizing sharps or trays containing sharps (outside the OR) are responsible for the safe and proper disposal of those sharps. A new Medical Staff Policy #2895 provides details and can be accessed from the Seton Intranet. A reminder poster about the sharps initiative will be posted throughout Seton facilities. (11/9/07)

The 2007 Meriwether Award recognizes the more than $86 million in contributions. Philanthropic support will help expand and enhance programs and services, recruit and retain top medical professionals, and acquire the most advanced technology. Three Central Texas Pediatricians Named UTMB "Teachers of Distinction."

UTMB's Top Doc Award recipients are chosen from a pool of active student preceptors. It recognizes the contributions of community-based physicians who help educate the next generation of health care professionals and serve as positive role models. Local recipients include Leighton Ellis, MD, North Austin Pediatrics; Boris Gritzka, MD, Austin Regional Clinic; and Maria Scranton, MD, Austin Regional Clinic. Antibiotic Stewardship Program Begins at SMCA.

A new multidisciplinary stewardship team will work closely with Infection Control and microbiology. Goal is to audit antimicrobial regimens to make therapeutic interventions when necessary and provide educational feedback regarding their use. Learn more in the November Seton Network Notes. Seton Shoal Creek Will Open New Beds in December.

Construction is underway on 5 South to increase capacity by 16 beds. The Travis County Healthcare District will provide funding for up to ten patients daily. Today's Austin American-Statesman reported that Travis County MHMR will be required to reduce its admissions to Austin State Hospital. (11/1/07)

SNW Upgrades To National USP 797 Pharmacy Code Jan. 1.

Construction is underway on the second floor to expand the Pharmacy. An upgrade to HVAC system, additional filtration and other clean room environment initiatives are needed to assure the safety and integrity of medications. (10/31/07)

SMC Williamson Physician Credentialing Has Begun.

Current medical staff members may submit a one-page Additional Facility Request Form. Prospective and new medical staff members should begin the credentialing process as soon as possible. Ava Wood, RN, Named Executive Director of AISD Student Health Services.

She will continue to lead the Dell Children's Specialty Care Center and its programs. A skilled nurse, manager and leader in children's health for the Seton Family for a long time, Ava also was a school nurse for six years. A goal is to more effectively integrate the Student Health Services program into Dell Children's ministry. (10/26/07)

SMCW Contributes $100,000 to Build Warm Water Therapy Pool at Round Rock Family YMCA.

SMCW will also provide supervised warm water physical and occupational therapy and rehabilitation services to Seton patients recovering from an orthopedic injury or joint replacement surgery, or those with arthritis or neurological conditions. Patients must also be members of the YMCA. The aquatic center breaks ground this month. SMCW opens in February. (10/24/07)

Dell Children's begins the series on Thursday from 6-7 p.m. at the Dell Children's Auditorium. Authorization Number Required for All Patients.

Beginning Nov. 1, all patients including uninsured, underinsured and insured must have an authorization number issued by the Seton Health Plan (324-3135 or fax to 324-1936) or the patient’s insurance company before non-emergency procedures such as surgery or imaging can be scheduled. Please allow 72 hours. Your office will be notified after authorization has been approved and scheduling may proceed. Useful details will be posted around Seton Family locations. (10/22/07)

SNW Pilots Express Admissions Nurse.

The test will determine whether less delay and wait time for patient admission to inpatient unit can be gained by having a single clinician focus on expediting orders and test processing, theoretically allowing quicker admission. ED and 4th floor will be involved and working with hospitalists. (10/19/07)

Brack Trauma - Critical Care Capacity Doubled.

Eight new beds were opened this week in addition to 10 opened in May for a total of 18 trauma beds. Fifteen exam rooms in the former Children's Hospital Emergency Department are also under construction. Expansion includes four major resuscitation rooms for major trauma and four negative air pressure isolation critical care rooms. The $6 million cost was shared by Seton and the Travis County Healthcare District, which contributed $1 million. (10/18/07)

Dell Children's Wins Texas Construction Magazine Design Award.

An independent jury of design and construction experts selected Dell for the prestigious 2007 Judges Award for Design from 110 nominated projects in Texas. Selection criteria included project management, overcoming challenges on the job, client service and safety. The design entries were also rated on unity with nearby societal and environmental elements. (10/16/07)

Funds will be used to purchase an Intra-Operative MRI (iMRI).

One of the most recent breakthroughs in surgical technology, the iMRI allows more aggressive removal of brain tumors by enabling physicians to pinpoint the exact location of tumors and diseased tissue during surgery. By minimizing removal or damage of healthy brain tissue around the tumor using the iMRI, surgeons may help patients avoid cognitive or physical disabilities following surgery. (10/12/07)

Ascension Board, City of Kyle Approve Building SMC Hays.

e acquisition is complete for the $143 million project scheduled to open in early 2010. Located just east of the intersection of I-35 and Hwy. 1626, the site will include the new 108-bed state-of-the-art facility and a significant mixed-use development including professional offices and retail shopping. Overall, the project is the largest development venture in Kyle area history and expected to generate 4,600 jobs. Plans include built-in expansion options for serving the population that is expected to grow by nearly 300,000 residents by 2020 -- 11 percent of the Central Texas region's population. (10/11/07)

Seton Team Selected For Elite Patient Safety Training.

Dr. Frank Mazza will lead the team to work on their Sickle Cell Disease project. It was one of only 26 projects selected from across the nation and the only Texas team to participate. The training is provided by the Patient Safety Improvement Corps (PSIC), a nationally regarded patient safety training program in Washington, DC. Their goal is to develop a closed-loop system to care for sickle cell patients that would include the physician's office, outpatient and inpatient care, best practices and patient and care provider support. Dr. Chris Ziebell Named Brack Medical Director of Emergency Service.

He will work closely with long-time Brack leader Dr. Pat Crocker to ensure a smooth transition of roles and responsibilities. Dr. Crocker is focusing his attention and energies at Dell Children's as Medical Director of Pediatric Emergency Service. Dr. Ziebell came to Seton in 1998 and has served in many roles, including Medical Director of SNW and SSW EDs, Trauma Director for SMC and SNW and Chief of Medical Staff for SSW and SNW. National Alopecia Areata Foundation Hosts "Bar-b-Cure for Alopecia" at Stubbs Sunday, Sept. 30.

Goal is to raise money for research and raise public awareness of auto-immune disease that affects more than five million people, causing partial to full hair loss of the scalp and body. Labyrinth Planned for SNW.

Work is underway on a proposal to build a labyrinth in the wooded area adjacent to the employee parking lot. Found in various forms and settings, the labyrinth has been used throughout history as a way to reconnect the spiritual self to the mind and body. SSW already has a labyrinth, one is planned for SMCW and the Seton Cove makes a portable one available regularly at SMCA. (9/24/07)

Case Study: New Onset Seizures.

Study explores the course of treatment and outcome for a pediatric patient who presented with epileptic seizures. Reported history and evaluation led to successful drug therapy which currently exhibits no side effects. Click here for more details. (9/20/07)

Prescriptions Pads at Seton Undergoing Changes.

Changes to federal law will prohibit payment for Medicaid prescriptions that are not written on tamper-resistant prescription pads beginning Oct. 1, 2007. Seton is working with suppliers to create new pads that will be distributed to departments in time to meet the deadline. Physicians, please continue using current pads and discharge instructions until new ones become available. Medicaid guidelines do not apply to electronic, faxed, or verbal prescriptions or those paid by managed care. SNW Short Stay Unit Being Relocated to 4th Floor.

Currently near the ED, it will be moved as a way of improving service to patients and to consolidate staffing. Moderate sedation patients from Imaging will be recovered in PACU. Reminder: Medicare Change in Discharge Planning Notification.

SC Announces Priority Transfer Protocol for Psych Patients in Seton EDs.

Patients with psych issues have long presented a special challenge to ED physicians and staff because of multiple medical, behavioral and medication problems that take ED time and space that could be used for other patients with emergent and urgent medical issues. ED social workers who had been doing initial assessment similar to clinicians at SSC have been trained to facilitate potential admissions for appropriate psychiatric patients. SSC is adding 16 new inpatient psych beds and four new doctors. (7/31/07)

New SNW MRI Busier Than Predicted.

On June 30th, Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas will open, poised to set the standard in providing quality, family-centered, multi-disciplinary health care to children and adolescents.  The Seton Family of Hospitals has produced a second TV spot to share how special this unique medical center is to the community.  The commercial is part of a multi-media advertising campaign that launched in June and will air on all major networks and targeted cable channels.

Dell Children's Open, JCAHO Accredited.

In all, 35 acute care and nine intensive care pediatric patients were transferred without incident Saturday. The facility will receive JCAHO accreditation following a 4-day unannounced visit last week that resulted in no recommendations. (7/2/07)

Recommendations/Guidelines for Prophylaxis Treatment Following Pertussis Exposure

A healthcare worker at Seton Medical Center in the Mother-Baby Unit was recently diagnosed with probable pertussis. As a result, approximately 160 mothers and their babies were potentially exposed. Dr. Adolfo Valadez from Austin Travis County Health Department has recommended that all potentially exposed patients (mothers, babies and family members on the unit during the time frame of 5/5 – 5/25) be prophylaxed if asymptomatic and treated if symptomatic utilizing the CDC guidelines/recommendations. Drs. Todd Bagwell from Austin Infectious Disease Consultants and Dr. Marisol Fernandez from ‘Specially for Children have reviewed these guidelines and are in agreement. (5/27/07)

She was a member of the leadership team at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison. Previously she was on the staff of the Unversity of Iowa Health Center and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Brack Opens 10 New Trauma-Critical Care Rooms.

They include three major resuscitation rooms and seven critical care rooms. Six of the seven critical care rooms are "negative air pressure isolation" rooms where infectious diseases can be treated. Eight more rooms will open this fall. The Travis County Healthcare Districted contributed $1 million of the $6 million expansion of the Trauma Center. (5/24/07)

SMCA to Consolidate Obstetrical Services.

Construction begins this month on a 124,000 sf addition to the west side of hospital. New space and renovated current space on the second floor will consolidate OB services capable of handling 5,000 births per year. SSW Receives TNA Nurse-Friendly ™ Hospital Designation.

It is one of nine Texas facilities honored this spring that demonstrated compliance with 12 TNA-developed criteria in policy and practice. Nurses confirmed through confidential surveys that hospital is committed to nurses and values their contributions. Separate Informed Consent Forms Now Required for Stress Tests.

This change should increase communication among the care team and the patient about the serious nature of their potential condition. Patients or their representatives should be be informed by the physician about risks, benefits and alternatives to the test prior to the procedure. Children's Trauma Leaders Work to Impact Legislation Benefiting Children.

CHOA Trauma Services Medical Director Dr. Todd Maxson was instrumental in recent ruling by Health and Human Services designating pediatric hospitals as trauma centers, thus allowing to receive a share of disproportionate funds. Children's Trauma Services Director Paula Yuma and SafeKids Coordinator Tareka Wheeler have been working to help pass a bill to strengthen Texas laws by requiring children to ride in a booster seat until the age of 8 years. Patient Safety Alert: Acute Renal Failure Associated with Administration of Intravenous Acyclovir.

In December 2006, a Patient Safety Alert for Intravenous Acyclovir was distributed across the network in response to a case report of acute renal failure possibly related to IV acyclovir. State Adopts New Zero-Tolerance Enforcement Policy on Open Medical Records.

New government interpretation for enforcement of longstanding regulation requires that all elements of medical record be completed within 30 days. Seton will be held accountable to ensure new zero-tolerance policy is enforced in short order. Internal systems are being reviewed for process improvements. Cancer Data Hits 100 Percent.

As a requirement for recognition as an approved cancer program, each year Seton's Oncology Data Management Department submits data. Last year, the Seton data submission was accepted at 100 percent, which means no cases were rejected and no cases had quality problems. Congratulations to the Data Management team. (1/25/07)

CHOA Pediatric Transports Increased Dramatically in 2006.

In first year since Pediatric Transport Team became a separate dedicated unit, unit performed 747 transports compared to just 160 the year before. Next focus will be on how to expand services and reduce transport time. (1/23/07)

Epilepsy Case Study: Chronic Refractory Epilepsy and Left Posterior Temporal Cavernous Angioma.

Seizure patient with malfomation in the left posterior superior temporal region unable to control seizures with medications evaluated with non-invasive video-EEG monitoring. After review, awake craniotomy performed guided by concerns for preserving language capabilities. As a result, patient had no significant language difficulties and improvement in seizures. SMCA Williamson Makes Speedy Progress.

Site is on schedule to open in Jan. 2008. Installation of underground utilities for Women's Center and pouring columns for patient tower are currently underway. Case Study: Awake Craniotomy for Resection of Cavernous Angioma.

Discusses treatment of patient with history of multiple daily seizures with surgery following extensive imaging evaluations. Results were much less frequent seizures that may able to be controlled through medication. If not, further surgery is possible. Click here for details. (1/10/07)

Brack Brain & Spine Center Designated Center of Excellence.

The Center participated in a nationwide survey of 150 hospitals with a focus on neurosciences, sponsored by Neurosource and HealthTech. Based on this study, 36 hospitals received Center of Excellence designation, including Brackenridge Hospital for the Brain & Spine Center. This survey looked at a number of things, including administrative support, physician specialties, and available technology. (1/5/07)

Seton Buys Hays County Site Near Kyle for Possible Future Major Medical Center.

Area expected to grow to 185,000 by 2010 and 285,000 in 2020, a more than 50% growth rate in 10 years. Location is 205 acres at Intersection of I-35 & FM 1625 (Kyle Parkway). Brack & SMCA Officially Re-Certified as Primary Stroke Centers.

Both received coveted Gold Seal of Approval™from JCAHO for comprehensive stroke prevention and treatment programs. The two facilities were the first hospitals in the state to be designated in December 2004. The designation is good for two years, thus an on-site follow-up visit was conducted by JCAHO last November. (1/3/07)
