Imaging IT manager Chad Waggoner has created an easy-to-follow explanation about how to access the information, which helps resolve issues being experienced. The changes only impact formatting and location of the screen in PACS and does not affect other applications. Lone Star Circle of Care & Seton Family of Hospitals Open New Clinical Hub in Round Rock.
The multi-service clinical hub is located at the Texas A&M Health Science Center and will provide primary health care and preventive services to approximately 31,000 patients per year. Seton provided a $3.5 million grant to fund equipment, staffing and start-up costs. (2/23/10)
Dr. John Stokes Performs new YESS Procedure.
YESS is a minimally invasive procedure designed to relieve symptoms caused by herniated discs. It uses a new visualization device for the first time at Seton. He explained the procedure to KXAN-TV. (2/22/10)

No orders from COMPASS or A2K will flow to RIS, meaning exams to be done during that time need to be ordered via your site's downtime process for ordering Radiology exams (includes all plain film, CT, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Mammo, and Fluoroscopy procedures). For any STAT exams requested during the downtime, call the Imaging department directly. All images will be available in PACS by searching under “All Studies” filtering by patient name and study date. Any results transcribed prior to the downtime will be available in COMPASS unaffected by this outage. (2/2/10)

Locally Developed Pediatric Depression Treatment Adopted in Netherlands and Belgium.
UT-Austin educational psychologist Kevin Stark, co-founder of the Texas Child Study Center (TCSC), created the ACTION program, a form of cognitive behavioral therapy that is extremely effective in helping youth manage and overcome depression. The program is now the government sanctioned treatment in both countries. TCSC is a formal collaboration between UT-Austin and the Seton Family of Hospitals. It operates an outpatient mental health clinic for Dell Children's. Congratulations to Dr. Stark. (1/29/10)
Pediatric Conference: Keeping Central Texas Children Well Apr. 10.
Dell Children's hosts third annual conference on health and well-being of children. Highlights include topic presentations on craniofacial and dental issues; pediatric urology; child and adolescent athlete; and adolescent medicine. Injury Prevention Team to Open Safety Store at Dell Children's.

The Community Health Coalition of Caldwell County Fights Diabetes.
The coalition is staffed and supported by Seton through in-kind support. It provides comprehensive care coordination for patients and also teaches them how to self-manage their condition. The goal is to reduce emergency room visits among the County's diabetes sufferers who rely on Seton Edgar B. Davis. (1/26/10)

SMCH Surgeon Dr. Syed Sameer Mohiuddin Publishes Paper About Laparoscopic Assisted Surgery.
Surgical Laparoscopy Endoscopy & Percutaneous Techniques featured his research in its December issue. A retrospective review of all laparoscopic-assisted endoluminal surgeries from 1991 to 2007, it concluded that surgeons are developing fundamental skills and spatial orientation needed to perform safely in the emerging feeld of natural orifice transluminal endoscopy surgery (NOTES), the anticipated progression fo minimally invasive surgery. Seton President/CEO Charles J. Barnett Named Austinite of the Year.
Austin Chamber of Commerce announced selection because of his leadership role in creating partnership with the University of Texas System and UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. The new collaboration will expand graduate medical education, medical research and access to healthcare in Central Texas. He will receive the official award at the Chamber's 132nd Annual Meeting on Feb. 9. (12/22/09)
SMCW Now Offering Level II Trauma Services.
Beginning this week, trauma services were expanded to Level II capability as the next step to seeing Level II Trauma Center designation. Services include trauma surgeons available 24 hours a day, seven days a week; other specialists include neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons, and plastic surgeons. These surgeons can perform a wide range of highly complex treatments such as craniofacial reconstruction and hand reconstruction. SMCW's trauma team is led by Dr. Ben Coopwood. (12/21/09)

Dell Children's Obesity Program Receives $1 Million Grant.
The four-year Michael and Susan Dell Foundation grant will support growth for the growth of the program's multidisciplinary clinic and integration with school health education. The program is led by Dr. Stephen Pont, following a successful pilot last year in association with the Austin Independent School District. (12/16/09)
Seton Improves Printed Medication upon Admission List.
Based on physician input, COMPASS-generated list now includes clinician who last updated the list of medications, individual’s title (RN, pharmacy tech, etc.) and date and time information was entered or verified. Also, when you identify an error in the home medication list, please use the New Orders section of the Medication upon Admission List to write an order that instructs Pharmacy to correct the home medication list. Dell Children's Movable MRI Operating Suite Now In Use.
Advanced neurosurgical technology at Dell Children’s allows surgeons to safely use advanced imaging techniques on patients during brain surgery to rule out any complications before the patient leaves the operating room. Using real time images and data, physicians can make decisions that improve patient outcomes. It is one of 13 intra-operative suites in the nation and one of five specifically used at pediatric facilities. The $10 million project was funded by donations to the Children's Medical Center Foundation. (12/14/09)

The new Physician Enterprise led by Bob Bonar will include creation of a world-class MSO to assist employed and community physicians with administrative responsibilities. UMCB VP/COO Bruce Broslat will become VP/COO of the new MSO; D&T VP Kate Henderson will become VP/COO of UMCB; SNW VP/COO Chuck Durant will become VP D&T; SHL VP/COO Scott Fuller will become VP/COO of SNW; and current SHL Non-Clinical Services Director Arie Dejong will become the new VP/COO of SHL. The expansion includes emergency surgery to treat traumatic brain and spine injury cases that will decrease the number of patients that will need to be transferred. The change is part of an effort to increase SMCW trauma capabilities from Level III to Level II. Neurosurgeons at SMCW include Dr. Mark Lee, Dr. Robert Buchanan and Dr. Alex Valadka. (12/10/09)

Dell Children's Sleep Disorder Center Obtains Accreditation.
The Center recently received the highest level of accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Two kinds of programs test and treat sleep disorders. A sleep lab is limited in its scope to observe, diagnose and treat one type of disorder, most commonly respiratory sleep disorders. A sleep center can test for and treat any child from newborn to 18 years old for all levels of sleep disorders including respiratory-related sleep disorders, narcolepsy, sleep walking and sleep talking, REM sleep behavior disorder, insomnia – plus other more complex sleep disorders. Seton Rejects Scott & White's Offer to Sell Temple King's Daughters Hospital. .
Due diligence review suggests offer restrictions by S&W plus deteriorating condition of hospital make it untenable according to Seton President & CEO Charles Barnett. S&W made offer after a merger agreement with KDH earlier this year was investigated by the Federal Trade Commission and Texas Attorney General. The offer to sell to Seton was part of resolution recommended to conclude investigation. (12/1/09)

Seton Names Alex Valadka, MD, FACS New Adult Neurosciences, Neurotrauma Chief.
Dr. Valadka is a neurosurgeon who specializes in neurotrauma and neurocritical care. He also treats brain tumors, aneurysms, spine problems and other neurosurgical diseases. He received his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed his residency program in neurosurgery at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He previously was director of Neurotrauma Services at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston following a role as professor of Neurosurgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Dr. Valadka is a consultant for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury to the Commissioner of Major League Baseball. He will lead the Seton Brain & Spine Institute. Please welcome him. (11/17/09)

GlaxoSmithKline and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration notified health care professionals of a report of the death of a patient with influenza who received Relenza (zanamivir) Inhalation Powder that was solubilized and administered by mechanical ventilation. Relenza (zanamivir) Inhalation Powder is not intended to be reconstituted in any liquid formulation and is not recommended for use in any nebulizer or mechanical ventilator. (11/12/09)

Seton Family of Hospitals Adds Helicopter Air Transport to High-Risk Maternity Program.
High-risk pregnant women with emergency medical complications can receive rapid access to Seton's high risk obstetric and neonatal care. Adult Hospital Operations Consolidated Under Jesus Garza, Greg Hartman Named UMCB and CEC President and CEO.
Hartman and three other operations presidents John Brindley, Tom Gallagher and Mark Hazelwood will report to Garza as EVP Hospital Operations. It follows announcement of consolidation of physician enterprise initiatives under the leadership of Bob Bonar as EVP Physician Enterprise, also president and CEO of Dell Children's. Changes are generated by need for successful hospital operations in addition to the affiliation agreement between UT, UTSW and Seton that is expected to substantially increase academic medicine and research activities in Central Texas. SMCH Reports Successful First Two Weeks.
As of Oct. 15, 10 babies have been born at SMCH. Three of those deliveries occurred in the first two days. In the first seven days, the Emergency Department averaged 69 visits per day — a volume that is almost three times the budgeted ED visits for the month. All areas of the hospital have experienced much higher than budgeted patient volumes. Surgical activity has also exceeded expectations with a tonsillectomy and open heart surgery. Daily census is averaging 15 and growing. Congratulations to physicians and staff at SMCH who are bring quality health care to an underserved county. (10/20/09)

New Safety Protocol for Clinicians Who Administer tPA.
Old protocol is out of date and has inappropriate dosing ranges. Please replace any existing copies. Seton patient safety alert impacts those in ED, ICU, Cath Labs, Special Procedure Labs and other patient care settings that involve stroke interventions. UT Southwestern, Seton, UT System Approve Affiliation Agreement.
An innovative partnership that will significantly increase medical training, medical research and collaborative research efforts in Central Texas was approved today by the UT Board of Regents and the Seton Board of Trustees. The agreement becomes effective Nov. 30 and is expected to expand medical research and availability of care in the region. (10/12/09)

Seton Medical Center Hays Open For Patients.
SMCH began seeing patients this morning. The new medical campus located in Kyle delivers advanced inpatient and outpatient medical care and emergency services. The state-of-the-art hospital currently is licensed for 112 beds, designed to grow to almost 300 beds and includes an outpatient surgery center, and a medical office building. This is an effort to shape oncology EHR development to best support the needs of the practicing oncologist and other cancer care providers. Da Vinci Robot in Use at SMCW.
The robotic-assisted surgical system was put into service in August and is available for use. The effective, minimally-invasive surgery approach is at the forefront of technology and suitable for certain urologic, gynecologic and cardiothoracic conditions. Dell Children’s Expands Craniofacial, Reconstructive Plastic Surgery Services.
New programs include a hand clinic and a dental clinic. New hand clinic medical staff are Steven L. Henry, MD, and Sanjay K. Sharma, ME, both fellowship-trained hand and microsurgery specialists. The dental clinic will be led by Lisa S. The well-known piece of public art was being moved from Republic Square Park to storage. UMCB, Dell Children’s Officially Designated Level I Comprehensive Trauma Centers.
Both hospitals have been increasing trauma research education and adding special procedures including microvascular surgery and digit/limb reattachment. Other Level I services have been provided for some time. Until now, Austin has been the largest city in the nation without a Level I trauma center. They become the 11th and 12th Level I centers in Texas. Dell is one of three pediatric Level I trauma centers in the state, only the 17th in the nation and the only free-standing children’s hospital to achieve Level I status without a direct connection to a medical school. Radiology PACS Maintenance Scheduled Saturday Aug. 15.
Telerad archive will be offline from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the Seton PACS archive from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. for upgrades. Current images can still be viewed through Telerad. STAT call reports can still be requested and obtained. PACS assistance is also available 24/7 by calling the IT Helpdesk at x48992 or by paging PACS support at 603-0340. PCs with PACS client will automatically install during this time. Upgrades include change in screen color, a new feature called internal common view to Power Jacket list of exams and include studies across different sites, and other archives like CPRMC and ARA will match. Dr. Robert J. Buchanan New Chief of Functional and Restorative Neurosciences.
A psychiatrist and neurosurgeon, Dr. Buchanan joined the Seton Family from Scott & White Hospital and the Texas A&M Health Science Center, where he was Chairman of Neurosurgery and Director of the Neuroscience Institute. At Seton, he will be involved in the surgical treatments of epilepsy, movement disorders, essential tremor, Tourette's disorder, pain and psychiatric disorders. All Five Seton Family of Hospitals Birthing Facilities Designated Texas Ten Step Sites.
Texas Ten Step is the DSHS and THA recognition of sites the provide optimal breastfeeding support for new mothers. Each has implemented 10 support goals and promote healthy outcomes for newborns by training all maternity associates and providing resources for continued care after discharge. DSHS goal is to raise breastfeeding rate in Texas to 75 percent from its current 70 percent level. (8/11/09)

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) Secures Funding for Digital Mammography at UMCB.
As a member of the appropriations committee, she announced that the FY 2010 appropriations bill includes $150,000 for the advanced diagnostic screenings. UMCB provides about 4,000 screening and diagnostic mammograms annually. The new equipment reduces X-ray exposure, increases detection rates, reduces need for recall and is more comfortable for the patient. (8/4/09)
COMPASS Update for Seton Medical Center Hays Physicians.
When SMCH opens Oct. 1, it will be the largest acute care hospital in Hays County providing full-service emergency, surgical, critical and cardiac care to this rapidly growing resident population. PPN Orders Now Include Nutrition Consult.
To improve patient safety, a nutrition consult is required when PPN is ordered. Physician will thebe called by the dietitian before the PPN is filled by pharmacy. PPN may not be the safeest practice for some patients. It is recommended only if the patients has good PIV access, needs at least 5 days and no more than two weeks of partial or total PN, can tolerate 2.5 - 3 liters fluid/day; does not need large amounts of nutrients/electrolytes, has only mild malnutrition. iMRI Nearing Completion at Dell Children's.
The moveable machine is advanced neurosurgical technology that allows surgeons to safely image patients during brain surgery to help rule out complications before the patient leaves the OR. Dell Children's Awarded $40,000 For Childhood Cancer Research.
This is the second year Hyundai Motor America has chosen Dell Children's for a 2009 Hope on Wheels donation. Pediatric oncologist Dr. Virginia Harrod of The Children's Blood and Cancer Center has been selected as the 2009 Hyundai Scholar. The donation supports Dr. Harrod's research on psychosocial intervention and will help fund a pilot study evaluating the optimal timing of presentation of late effects associated with cancer therapy. It is one of five outstanding programs nationwide to receive the award for its exemplary efforts to deliver high-quality asthma care. New CMS Rule Regarding Signing of Physician Preprinted Orders.
Physicians, Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants are impacted by new requirements to initial ANY CHANGE in orders by the ordering physician and to initial each page of the order and sign the final one. Phased implementation will upload new revised orders and complete stakeholder communications throughout July. HIM will begin auditing the new process in August. The site connects expectant moms and parents of newborns in our local community to Seton's own community of perinatal experts in addition to providing other useful local resources. It includes forums on popular subjects such as labor and delivery and breastfeeding plus contact information for Seton services and physicians and the ability to pose questions to our panel of experts. Seton President & CEO Charles Barnett, FACHE, Receives Medal from Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Organization.
The Bicentennial Medal Barnett recognizes 51 men and women from diverse backgrounds who were honored for their significant contributions in social services, education and health care. It is awarded by the Seton Legacy of Charity in honor of St. Elizabeth. She founded the American community of the Daughters of Charity, the group of sisters who began Seton in 1902 and are a major part of Seton's parent organization, Ascension Health. (6/17/09)

Junior League Supports Diabetes Patients at Seton.
A generous 75th anniversary grant from the organization allowed Seton to purchase 69 pairs of special diabetic shoes for unfunded patients. Of the more than 12,500 patient served by Seton community health centers, approximately 1,100 have diabetes. The specially prescribed shows are designed to help prevent the development of debilitating foot injuries. (6/5/09)

Children’s Optimal Health Gains Momentum.
The program includes enhanced data sharing with several other Central Texas organizations to create a mapping system of the needs of children in local neighborhoods. For example, the map seeks to determine those areas where kids are overweight or who have unusually high levels of asthma. The data is de-identified as to individuals. Interventional neuroradiologists at SMCA used a catheter-guided device called Penumbra® to break up and remove a large clot and restore blood flow. Seton Brain & Spine doctors were part of the clinical trials for the device, which was approved last year. The 28 year old patient left the hospital after just five days. (5/7/09)
Gov. Perry Appoints Dr. Pat Crocker to Texas Medical Board.

Seton Study Predicts Significant Physician Shortage.
The study found almost one in 10 Central Texans over age 45 have difficulty seeing a doctor right now. It predicts that nearly 3,000 more physicians are needed in our area by 2020, including 1,000 new primary care doctors. One of four individuals interviewed during a telephone survey believe there are too few doctors in Central Texas already and they sometimes find the doctor of their choice is not seeing new patients or does not accept a particular type of insurance. The studies are part of ongoing research by the network to help understand and predict the need for care in Central Texas. (3/26/09)

SFH Changes Corporate Name.
The Board of Trustees voted to change the legal name from Daughters of Charity Health Services of Austin to Seton Healthcare. Public reference will remain Seton Family of Hospitals. The change was made to demonstrate a common ministry with our parent company, Ascension Health, which includes other organizations in addition to the Daughters of Charity, our original founders in 1902. US Green Building Council President and CEO Rick Fedrizzi presented the award to celebrate the hospitals designation as the world's first LEED Platinum hospital. Non-Latex Nitrile Gloves Added to Synthetic.
The new gloves are a rubber co-polymer of acrylonitrile (ACN) and butadiene, a rubber-like substance often used in industrial and automotive applications. The Kyle Parkway extension from I-35 east to Dacy Lane was completed and Seton Parkway will be opened soon. SMCA ED Pilots Online Scheduling Tool for On-Call Physicians.
AMION, pronounced Am I On, can be viewed from any internet-enabled device. Hospital-based clinician schedules can be viewed in real time and other physicians and their office staffs eventually will be able to post directly into the system, eliminating the dependence on faxed or mailed schedules. Through education, explanation and auditing clinician and patient understanding, we are trying to achieve more transparency in health care as part of national patient safety goals. Seton Continues Implementation of Complex Network Passwords to Strengthen Information Security.
Physicians with Seton user accounts will be prompted when their current password expires and asked to adopt a complex password. A complex password should meet these requirements: Does not contain any portion of the user's name; must be at least seven characters and must contain three of the following categories. Categories include Uppercase letters (A to Z), Lowercase letters (a to z), Numbers (0 - 9) or Non-alphanumeric characters (!,@,#,$, etc.). Major improvements in reducing delinquent records have been made during the last year and are to be commended. HIM continues to look for opportunities to improve compliance measures. Beginning this month, physicians who receive three or more occurrences of site suspensions due to delinquent medical records within a 90-day period will be referred and subject to peer review. Quintuplets Born Friday at SMCA.
Delivery of four girls and one boy weighing between 2 pounds and 2 pounds, 13 ounces required care from about 30 physicians and staff led by Dr. Stephanie Reich. NCI Releases New Online Colon Cancer Risk Assessment Tool.
The tool calculates colorectal cancer risk in men and women age 50 or older based on a new risk-assessment model developed by NCI researchers. It may assist health care providers and their patients in making informed choices about screening and possibly for designing screening and prevention trials. New SSW Labyrinths to be Deducated New Year's Eve.
The original labyrinth was moved to make space for the new POB on the site. Volunteers reinstalled it and added another labyrinth of a different design to form an infinity symbol. Dell Children’s Pediatric SKIN Bundle Recognized by NACHRI.
A study of Dell's PICU experience out of nine other participating children's hospitals was dramatically lower and related to the SKIN bundle, which dropped pressure ulcer incidence rates. NACHRI now refers to the practice as the Austin Effect. The study will be the focus of an article in the American Journal of Critical Care. (12/29/08)

In today’s electronic environment this is felt to be the most reliable method of getting information directly to the physician. Please provide the unique e-mail address that you prefer for the purpose of SFH communications. Save Time With New Shortcut to Frequently Used Protocols and Order Sets On Intranet Site.
Beginning Dec. 18, clinicians can access this site quickly by double-clicking on the new Caduceus icon on the computer desktop. You no longer have to launch the Intranet and navigate through sub-menus to open the page. More than 2000 computers at Seton, including all public and semi-public machines and clinical PCs, FloCarts, tablets and laptops will get this shortcut. (12/17/08)

Dell Children's 10-Bed Addition to ED Fully Operational.
Emergency visits continue to exceed budgeted volumes and suggest much higher than expected volumes for the winter months. The new unit is currently open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.to address increasing usage. (12/11/08)

TOSA Recognizes UMCB For Organ Donations.
For the second time, UCMB has received the Medal of Honor for exceeding a donation rate of 75 percent. At UMCB, both physicians and clinicians are instrumental in helping identify potential donors and initiating the procurement process. During 2007, the medical and clinical staff facilitated 49 organ donor cases resulting in 171 individuals being given a second chance at life, according to a TOSA executive. (12/3/08)
Construction Underway for Intra-Operative MRI Suite at Dell Children's.
The fully-integrated operating room includes a movable MRI machine. This advanced technology will allow surgeons to safely image patients during surgery to rule out complications before leaving the OR. Dell is one of only 18 hospitals in the world to house the IMRIneuro suite. Construction is following LEEDS standards. Completion is expected by June. (12/2/08)

Austin/Travis County EMS Names SMCW Resuscitation Center of Excellence.
The designation is based on the commitment to process, capabilities, resources and physicians provided to cardiac arrest victims with the greatest chance of favorable neurological outcomes. As part of the Resuscitation Center of Excellence requirement, SMCW has the Arctic Sun, an innovative device that lowers a patient’s body temperatures. By cooling heart attack patients, preventing brain damage, a requirement of COE designation. Both Burnet County and Williamson County EMS departments are evaluating the hypothermia protocol. Dr. Patrick Garcia becomes full time VPMA for Seton’s south ministry Jan. 1, 2009. He will be VPMA for SMCH and also supervisory responsibility for part-time medical directors at SEBD and SSW. Dr. Samson Jesudass continues as medical director at SEBD but also will serve as associate medical director at SMCA under Dr. Frank Mazza. Single Incision Lap Band Surgery Performed at SNW.
The trans-umbilical LAP-BAND® procedure is a new technique that involves complete navigation and placement of the band through the belly button, thus eliminating the need for special instruments and leaving no visible scars on the abdomen. New Universal Security Standards Effective Oct. 27 for FloCart, SSO-enabled Computers.
Change will impact Dell Children's, UMCB and SMCW. SSO-enabled computers will lock and secure the desktop after thirty minutes of idle time. Exception will be physician desktop computers in secure areas such as physician lounges or physician charting areas. Change was recommended to improve patient privacy protections. Central Texas high school students participating in strenuous activities (athletics, band, cheerleading, mountain biking) will be screened for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). This serious heart condition is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young people but rarely has identifiable symptoms. Celebrate HAAM Benefit Day Oct. 7.
This is the third year of the program to assist area musicians gain access to low-cost primary care through the Health Allilance for Austin Musicians (HAAM). More than 90 bands have volunteer to play at restaurants, clubs and retail outlets across Austin who will donate 5% of their day's profits to HAAM. Seton, St. David's dental program and the SIMS Foundation joint forces to provide medical, dental and mental health services. More than 1,200 musicians are being served. Last year, Seton provided primary care services to 573 musicians, covered 965 prescriptions, 43 specialist referrals and 502 hospital services. (10/1/08)

Free Prostate Cancer Screening Draws More Than 140 Men.
Seton's Cancer Care Team help host free screening held at the Austin Cancer Center provided digital rectal exams and prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood tests. Of those screened, four men had an abnormal DRE and six had abnormal PSA reading. They were referred for additional follow-up. (8/22/08)

Award granted by Physicians Practice for July, 2008 issue. Orthopedic Surgeon Erik J. UMCB Granted Accredited Chest Pain Center With PCI Status.
The PCI designation recognizes the hospital's ability to evaluate and treat patients who fall under STEMI guidelines within 90 minutes. Only six percent of hospitals nationwide receive the designation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers, which promotes protocol-based medicine to address diagnosis and treatment of acute coronary syndromes and acute heart failure in addition to promoting process improvement science. SMCA is also an Accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI. (8/20/08)

Dell Children's Specialty Care Staff Pilots Pediatric Diabesity Program with YMCA.
The program uses a multidisciplinary approach to assist children ages 7 through 18 who are at risk of obesity and diabetes. It combines physical assessments/examinations with family dietary education, physical fitness activities and training, group counseling, and social service referrals. Womens' Imaging, Rehab Offered at New SMCW Medical Plaza.
The medical plaza is adjacent to SMCW and offers state-of-the-art imaging including bone densitometry, ultrasound, stereotactic breast biopsy and digital mammography. The COGNIS CRT-D is the smallest, thinnest high-energy CRT-D in the world, and offers increased longevity and an independent battery back-up system. Diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders has become a full-fledged subspecialty with fellowship training and board certification requirements. Physicians: Patient Safety Alert on Dilaudid.
This drug (HYDROmorphone) is 7 times more potent than Morphine. Two mg Dilaudid equals 14 mg. Morphine. For IV Dilaudid, typical starting dose should be 0.2 mg - 0.5 mg IVP every two hors PRN severe pain for all patients unless they have a known history of tolerating larger doses. It is best to start at the lowest dose and titrate to desired pain effect, ensuring patient safety. (7/8/08)

Preferred parking signage is being posted in all public and employee parking lots. A total of 81 reserved spaces including 60 for alternative fuels and 21 for carpooling are needed. UMCB Introduces Minimally-Invasive Surgery for Managing Gastroparesis.
Called Enterra Therapy, it involves inserting a gastric electrical neurostimulator in the stomach. The therapy uses mild electrical pulses to stimulate the nerves and smooth muscles of the lower stomach, helping to control nausea and vomiting. First patient treated has found relief from condition. UCMB is only Central Texas hospital offering the treatment. (7/1/08)

COMPASS Downtime Scheduled June 2 For Database Upgrade From Midnight to 4 A.M.
Currently COMPASS hosts an average of 1100 concurrent users in system at any one time and organizes patient data as far back as January 2003. With COMPASS use increasing, the current database architecture that manages the information, responds to user requests, coordinates traffic and securely storages the clinical information requires improvement. 2008 Clinical Research Forum Successful.
More than 170 researchers and medical leaders met last week at UMC Brack to share ideas and research. Turnout from major researchers was larger than expected as researchers presented more than 70 projects. Study subjects included Alcohol, Bicycle Helmets and Head Injury in Austin, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Snakebites in Central Texas and The University of Texas Biomedical Informatics Lab. Case Study: Abdomen Tumor: Malignant Nerve Sheath Tumor in Patient With Neurofibromatosis.
Patient treated surgically with radical excision. Neurofibromatosis is characterised by multiple benign tumors that rarely are malignant. Currently, patient is doing well and there is no evidence of recurrence. (5/12/08)

Atenolol IV Discontinued By Manufacturer, No Longer Available.
Astra-Zeneca, the sole manufacturer of intravenous atenolol, has discontinued the product and Seton is no longer able to obtain it. There is no impact on other atenolol formulations. Pharmacy has provided more information and a chart comparing atenolol to other beta blocker IV formulations and providing more details. FDA advised earlier that this dietary supplement has been found to contain hazardous levels of selenium (up to 200 times the label value) and chromium (up to 17 times the label value). The CDC advisory provides clinical descriptions of toxicity for both substances which have been reported in 91 cases across the nation. It has been distributed in Texas and over the internet. Dell Children's Art Project Adorns Cap Metro Buses
The artistic talents of young patients will soon be visible on the streets of Austin. The collaborative art project was led by local artist Ian Cion and includes Capitol Metro, which donated two buses, 3M, which donated the graphic materials used to wrap the buses, and the support of Art Alliance Austin. Moxiflxacin (Avelox®) and ciprofloxacin (Cipro®) will become the preferred fluoroquinolones within the Seton Family of Hospitals except for Dell Children’s Medical Center. The switch is an Ascension Health-level decision that is supported by Seton’s Anti-Infectives Monitoring Subcommittee and P&T. Due to the increasing need for mental health Intensive Care Unit beds, SSC recently opened a second Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit. New Epilepsy Monitoring Unit Opens at Dell Children's.
The three-bed unit is equipped with video electroencephalogram monitoring equipment to provide accurate diagnosis and treatment plans for patients with uncontrolled seizures. The video EEG allows the epilepsy team to see what the brain is doing during a seizure and helps determine whether surgical treatment will be beneficial. Before the unit opened, only one patient could be monitored at a time for several days and patients who needed surgery were transferred to Houston. Now the whole process can be performed at Dell Children's. (2/14/08)

Texas A&M School Of Medicine Affiliation Agreement Completed.
The school will bring residents to physician preceptors on the medical staff of Seton Medical Center Williamson. A&M is planning a small class of 16 medical students their first year, expected to begin this summer. (2/7/08)
Raise Money Online for Dell Children’s Medical Center.
The Children’s Medical Center Foundation of Central Texas introduces an easy and creative way for friends of all ages to support Dell Children’s Medical Center. “My Fundraiser” is a new feature on the Foundation Web site that allows anyone to design a fundraising page. Brack Name Changed to University Medical Center at Brackenridge.
The Travis County Healthcare District approved name that reflects the growth of academics and research at the downtown campus. Academic medicine includes clinical research, residency programs for doctors and nurses, cutting edge simulation training, graduate medical education the interdisciplinary Clinical Education Center located in the former Children’s Hospital building. Highlighting the facility's academic affiliations strengthens Seton's ability to recruit the nation's top medical students, doctors and nurses. (1/28/08)

If you have changed addresses or moved the area, you can pick up a new voter registration application at any Seton Family reception desk or gift shop in specially marked boxes. Just complete and drop in US Mail. Health care will be an issue in this year's presidential race. Seton will host early voting at some locations. (1/25/08)
Two Amendments to Medical Staff Bylaws Approved.
Effective immediately, the changes are applicable to all members of the Seton Medical Staff. The first addresses various name changes of programs, facilities and committees and sets requirements for NPI numbers. Dell Children's 'Diabesity' Program Receives Grant.
Dr. Rose Schneier hopes to have some elements of the program in place before the end of the fiscal year. More funding is needed, so program will be phased in. It addresses two growing concerns for the nation's children: increases in childhood obesity and diabetes. (1/23/08)

SMCA, SNW Receive Positive Comments Following POCT Review.
Joint Commission unannounced surveys of ED practices at both sites went well, with no recommendations for improvement (formerly Type I). Surveyor commented that the approach could be used as a model by other facilities. Recertification is expected. (1/17/08)
Dell Children's Installing Blood Irradiator in Lab.
Work was expected to begin yesterday. Staff training will begin immediately so the unit will become operational before the end of January. (12/16/08)
SNW Pharmacy Temporarily Located to SNW Health Plaza.
The move to the first floor of the Health Plaza was necessary for the major renovation of the pharmacy to comply with code requirements, including installation of 'clean room' conditions. (1/15/08)
Brack Medical Library Renamed, Relocated.
It will now be known as the Clinical Library and be located in the Clinical Education Center, room C2.203. The library serves Seton medical staff, Seton clinical staff and nursing education users. The new location has four times the sapce, three times the seating and twice as many computers. Ronald McDonald House Opens Next to Dell Children's.
Like Dell Children's the construction features green building techniques. It contains 25 new rooms (up from 13 in the old building) and can be expanded to 30 rooms. The house offers families support and a nurturing home-like environment when young patients receive care. (1/11/08)
