Physicians to Begin Electronic Order Entry at UMCB in April

April 26, 2011 will mark the beginning of a new era for our patients at University Medical Center Brackenridge. This is the day we move towards more complete integration of our patient care records with comprehensive nursing assessment documentation and the introduction of Computer Provider Order Entry (CPOE) via COMPASS, Seton's electronic health record. Physicians practicing at UMCB will be expected to use COMPASS to access diagnostic data, place orders electronically, and sign their medical records.

COMPASS is a key component of Seton's mission to provide Healthcare that Works, Healthcare that is Safe, and Healthcare that Leaves No One Behind. With it, we can:

• Dramatically reduce adverse drug events
• Improve our efficiencies in delivering patient care
• Access real-time data and patient charts from hospital, home, medical office or anywhere with an Internet connection
• Embed decision support and integrated reference materials to help provide optimal care

Physician training will be offered Monday through Saturday March 23 through April 25th. Please note, physicians who cover call/weekends are also required to complete training in order to practice at UMCB.

Physicians who practice concurrently at Seton Medical Center Hays must meet the goal of 70% use of CPOE or must attend additional training for CPOE. Due to the integral nature of providing orders for patient care, physicians are required to attend training for continued medical practice at UMCB. The UMCB Medical Executive Committee has ruled in support of mandatory education to be completed by April 25, 2011 with consequences if not completed by this date.

Physicians will receive their personal COMPASS log in and password upon completion of the COMPASS training and demonstration of COMPASS competency.
