Dr. Camille Hancock Friesen joined Dell Children’s Regional Heart Center on Oct. 1 as the new full-time chief cardiovascular surgeon.

Meet Dr. Hancock Friesen

Dr. Hancock Friesen brings more than 13 years of experience in pediatric and adult congenital and cardiac surgery. She comes to Austin, Texas from Halifax, Canada where she served as the Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at the IWK Health Centre, and as a Professor of Surgery at Dalhousie University.

Dr. Hancock Friesen has a robust academic and leadership background. She received her medical degree, and completed the residency program at the University of Alberta in Alberta, Canada before finishing her pediatric cardiac surgery fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital. She is board certified and a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons.

In her role, Dr. Hancock Friesen will co-lead the Dell Children’s Regional Heart Center with the chief of cardiology, Dr. Byron Holt.

Why her heart is in her work

Dr. Hancock Friesen’s passion for healthcare came at a young age. “I had my first doctors’ kit when I was three, and never looked back! When my parents prevailed on me to do aptitude testing in high school so that I wasn’t overlooking options, ‘tug boat captain’ ‘police officer’ and ‘medical doctor’ came up. So doctor it was! It is a privilege to be able to care for patients and their families,” she said.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to work with the cardiac team at Dell Children’s. I look forward to continuing the medical center’s proud tradition of providing excellent care to children and infants from all over the region regardless of a family’s ability to pay. And, I’m all about tackling new challenges and working as a team to even further enhance patient care and outcomes.”

Why the Dell Children’s Regional Heart Center Stands Out

The Dell Children’s Regional Heart Center, a Partnership with UT Southwestern, is a comprehensive pediatric heart program serving an expansive 46-county Central Texas region.

The center has the largest pediatric heart team in the region that includes pediatric cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiac intensivists, cardiac anesthesiologists, cardiac sonographers, and a dedicated clinical staff.

The Dell Children’s Regional Heart Center is also the only pediatric heart program in the region that provides prenatal diagnosis and planning with a pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program. It also has the only biplane cardiac catheterization lab dedicated to congenital heart disease. And, it’s an ICAEL/IAC accredited Echo lab for pediatric transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiograms.
